Weymouth’s Summer Firework Events Continue Throughout August
The third of Weymouth Town Council’s five summer firework displays returns on Monday 17th August, with a traditional display starting at 9.30pm.
People are encouraged to come early to make the most of the night and soak up the atmosphere. As well as the firework display, other family entertainment planned on Monday 17th August includes uplifting performances from Weymouth’s Rock Choir. They will be singing crowd pleasers from 8pm to 8.30pm in the charity stall square by the Beach Office, Weymouth seafront. A Punch and Judy show takes place on the beach at 8.30pm, and the fairground rides on the beach and at the Jubilee Clock will also be on offer. Plus, all are invited to step aboard Weymouth Land Train to join in with their musical trips, which take place between 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
Deputy Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Peter Dickenson, said: “We are now going into our third summer firework event of the season and it has been great to see so many people enjoying the displays, which have attracted a vast number of residents and visitors. It was a pleasure to lead the countdown to last week’s display with Dave from Air 107.2 Radio; thank you to everyone who joined in, creating such a wonderful atmosphere.
“We’re expecting the town centre to be busy again on Monday evening, so please plan your journey ahead. With pre-firework entertainment including a live performance from the Rock Choir, alongside the many pubs, restaurants and cafes in town serving up tasty food options, why not head down early and make the most of these special summer evenings?”
Remaining Dates and Times
The displays are every Monday night in August with the remaining displays scheduled on:
Monday 17th August, Monday 24th August – lower noise display, and Monday 31st August (Bank Holiday). Each display starts at 9.30pm.
Where to Watch the Fireworks
The fireworks are fired from a boat moored out in the bay and can be viewed from anywhere along Weymouth’s long stretch of seafront, from the Nothe all the way over to Overcombe and Bowleaze.
Getting Here
Wherever possible, people are being encouraged to leave their cars at home and walk, cycle or use public transport when getting to and from the displays.
As on previous summer firework nights only, access to both the Pavilion Forecourt and the Pavilion Car Park behind the theatre will be closed between 6pm and 10pm to help ease congestion in this area.
Weymouth Town Council is working with Dorset Council to trial this approach which is being closely monitored and will be reviewed at the end of the season.
Signs will be in place advising motorists about the closure of these two car parks. All other town centre car parks are open as usual, and all Dorset Council operated car parks are free after 6pm.
Please consider car sharing wherever possible.
Public Transport
There are a number of buses serving different communities in Weymouth and surrounding areas that bring passengers right to the beachfront. The number 1 (to Portland), the number 2 (Littlemoor and the Park and Ride), and the number 4 (to Preston via Overcombe) will have an extra double decker late-service running to cater for visitors to the fireworks. Children and young people aged 5 to 15 are able to travel for free on buses during August as part of the government’s Great British Summer Savings scheme.
Cycling
Consider using the Beryl Bike rental scheme – a sustainable way to travel to and from the event.
