St John’s Gardens

A formal, pocket park situated at the end of the long terrace of houses that run along the start of the main Dorchester Road, known as St John’s Terrace, past St John’s Church and opposite Weymouth Community Hospital. St John’s Gardens contain several grassed areas, herbaceous borders and rose beds and offers a place to be mindful, connect with others and enjoy nature. The gardens are accessible for all and is a wonderful community space which is visited regularly. Members of the community are welcome to use the gardens and there are always watering cans available if anybody would like to contribute to the space.

Around the garden, you will be able to see some beautifully designed plinths, which were painted by ‘Reconnecting with Nature’.

Weymouth Town Council worked in partnership with Litter Free Dorset and the Green Fingers group in making St John’s Garden a place where everyone can go and enjoy a safe space. This was launched in October 2023 with an accessible growing space created, where delicious vegetables and herbs are grown.

Green Fingers Group

The Green Fingers Group started up 8 years ago and is a small group of volunteers who come together to learn new skills, make community connections and work on gardening projects in the Weymouth area, such as growing incredible edibles. The group has had previous success with funding from ‘Reconnecting with Nature’, B&Q, Tesco Bags and Santander.

The scheme will work in partnership with Weymouth Town Council to encourage local people to have pride and take care of their local garden whilst helping to break down barriers between older and younger people.

The project will help increase social inclusion, encourage horticulture skillset sharing, improve health and wellbeing, and, by working with local schools, introduce an art area.

For more information on how you can get involved, please contact Volunteer Centre on 01305 269214.
