Weymouth is Gearing Up for the Big Christmas Lights Switch On!

With Weymouth’s Christmas Lights Switch On fast approaching this Saturday 29th November, the tree has arrived and the festive lighting and decorations are springing up across the town centre ready for the big event.

The main focus for the lights switch on will be around the large Christmas tree Weymouth Town Council has installed in New Bond Street today (Tuesday 25th November.)

The festive lighting on the Victorian lamp posts near Greenhill Gardens as well as all the lighting in the town centre is also up. And Weymouth Town Council is working in partnership with We Are Weymouth and Dream Cottages to provide new cone-shaped Christmas trees with LED lighting which add to the sparkle at three locations including Weymouth train station, outside the beach office on the promenade, and one in Hope Square.

Plus, there will be plenty of opportunities for sELFies in the run up to Christmas as the giant elf returns to New Bond Street along with a sleigh, which is a new addition for this year.

On Saturday 29th November, the Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson, will be joined by the panto cast and the winner of the Primary Times competition for the countdown and switch on at 5pm. The event coincides with many other exciting activities and entertainment happening in the town including an Elf World Record Attempt, elf workshops, and a parade, along with live music on the stage in New Bond Street. View the event here for full details.

Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson, said: “I’m excited to be switching on the Christmas lights this year, and it’s fantastic to see the extra trees that have been installed in the town thanks to the partnership between Weymouth Town Council, We Are Weymouth, and Dream Cottages. This is a welcome addition to the rest of the festive lights around the town centre.

“I would encourage everyone to take advantage of all the festive events happening throughout the day on the 29th, rounded off by watching the Christmas Lights Switch On at 5pm by the tree in New Bond Street!”

Dawn Rondeau-Irvine, Chief Operations Officer at We Are Weymouth, added: “2025 marks the beginning of an exciting new partnership between We Are Weymouth, Weymouth Town Council, and Dream Cottages. Together, we’re unveiling a stunning new LED light installation on 29th November to enhance the town’s Christmas light switch-on celebrations.

“We Are Weymouth is delighted to collaborate with Weymouth Town Council to deliver a spectacular Elf World Record attempt and entertainment on the 29th, alongside four weeks of festive fun designed to entice locals and visitors alike. From steampunk and morris dancing to the magical Elf Xpress, Weymouth is gearing up for another unforgettable Christmas season—and we hope everyone will join in the celebrations!”

There will also be free parking in Dorset Council’s town centre car parks to coincide with the events happening on the 29th November. For more details, visit the website.
