Service to mark US Memorial Day to be hosted by Weymouth Town Council
The Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson will host a ceremony to mark US Memorial Day on Monday 26th May. Members of the public are invited to attend this short wreath laying service at 11am, which takes place at the US Memorial located on the seafront opposite the Royal Hotel. The service will be conducted by The Mayor’s Chaplain, Father Scott Anderson.
Memorial Day is a national federal holiday in America, commemorating those who have served and sadly died in military service for their country. Weymouth has a rich military history, with many US soldiers having left the town’s shore to take part in the D-Day landings. The US Memorial is one of many remembrance memorials along the Promenade, to honour the brave individuals who served and sacrificed during times of conflict and war.
Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson said: “It is a privilege and honour to host this special event which recognises the US troops, including the vast number of personnel who left Weymouth Harbour to take part in D-Day in 1944. I would warmly welcome members of the public to join us as we take a moment to reflect on the immense courage, bravery and determination displayed by all troops during the Normandy landings and other conflicts.”
In 2023, Weymouth Town Council installed an interpretation board at the steps in Greenhill Gardens to remember the US soldiers who were destined for the frontline during World War II. The Rangers Way Board honours the 225 brave individuals who descended the steps in 1944 before marching towards Weymouth Pavilion to depart for Normandy, France.
Weymouth resident Tim Goodwin started this project with support and funding from the Friends of Greenhill Gardens and Weymouth Town Council. It serves as a powerful reminder of the courage of the troops and the critical role they played in our history. For more details, visit the website.
