Not long to go until the first Love Your Weymouth Festival
If you love Weymouth, then a brand-new event called Love Your Weymouth Festival is for you!
Weymouth Town Council has announced this new event for 2024 to bring people together to look at what can be done to tackle the effects of climate change here in Weymouth.
It takes place on Tuesday 13th February in the Council Chamber, The New Town Hall, Commercial Road. It will start at 10am to 2pm and is being held during the school holidays so that families can come along and get involved in some of the activities. These include creating your own smoothie by having a go on the smoothie bike, face painting, and there will also be a pledge tree where people can make a pledge on what they will do to help the local environment.
The festival aims to inspire more people to come together and learn how to create positive social environmental change by consuming products and services differently. By learning, and doing things differently, together we can all make a big difference. Learn more about how you can decrease your carbon footprint, increase healthy eating with cookery demonstrations, and be encouraged to explore more of Weymouth’s beautiful local green spaces. Learn from leading experts about recycling, composting, climate change, wildflowers, and more.
There will also be tips and talks from Repair Café, Biodiversity, Dorset Wildlife Trust, Greenpeace and Ants On A Rock who will be talking about invertebrates and how to look after them, you can visit their website here for more info. And there will also be an array of exhibitors from local groups and organisations for people to visit and find out more information about what’s going on in Weymouth to tackle climate change.
Everyone who attends will be given the option to enter a prize draw with the chance to win some amazing prizes including one family ticket for a Jurassic Cruise, five free family swim vouchers from Everyone Active, a remote control power multisocket device from Ridgewater Energy and many more.
Chair of the Climate and Ecological Emergency working group, Cllr Graham Lambert, said: “This is a great event to kick off 2024. The Love Your Weymouth Festival is not just a fun family event but a platform for fostering a sense of environmental responsibility within our communities
“Weymouth Town Council invites residents, families, and individuals of all ages to come along and learn more about the climate emergency as well as encouraging a collective commitment to doing more to preserve and cherish our town for future generations.”
Greenpeace member, Doug Skinner, who is giving a talk at the event, said: “Greenpeace will be giving an insight into what they do to help protect the environment. We believe the most worrying problem is the rapid rise in temperatures around the world due to man-made CO2 and methane released into the atmosphere. We will share our campaign at the festival to encourage renewable energy in the UK.”
In response to the climate threat, Weymouth Town Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and is committed to making the Council’s activities net zero carbon by 2030.
