All You Need to Know About Summer Fireworks Nights in Weymouth
Weymouth Town Council is counting down to the first of five seafront firework displays which start on Monday 3rd August. Here’s all you need to know to help plan your evening.
Dates, display types, and times
The displays are every Monday night throughout August including Monday 3rd August, Monday 10th August – lower noise display, Monday 17th August, Monday 24th August – lower noise display, and Monday 31st August (Bank Holiday). Each display starts at 9.30pm.
Where can I view the fireworks?
The fireworks are fired from a boat moored out in the bay and can be viewed from anywhere along Weymouth’s long stretch of seafront, from the Nothe all the way over to Overcombe and Bowleaze.
Getting here
Wherever possible, people are being encouraged to leave their cars at home and walk, cycle or use public transport when getting to and from the displays.
Parking
Please be aware that on the five firework nights only, access to both the Pavilion Forecourt and the car park behind the theatre will be closed between 6pm and 10pm to help ease congestion in this area.
As the Pavilion Car Park is currently operating at reduced capacity due to ongoing peninsula works – and with no theatre performances scheduled at Weymouth Pavilion on these evenings – Weymouth Town Council is working with Dorset Council to trial this new approach which will be reviewed at the end of the season.
Signs will be in place advising of the closure of these two car parks. All other town centre car parks will be open as normal. Please consider car sharing where possible.
Public Transport
There are a number of buses serving different communities in Weymouth and surrounding areas that bring passengers right to the beachfront. The number 1 (to Portland), the number 2 (Littlemoor and the Park and Ride), and the number 4 (to Preston via Overcombe) will have an extra late-service running to cater for visitors to the fireworks. The park and ride service is also operating.
Cycling
An additional bike parking area near the Pavilion Theatre will be in place for those wishing to cycle to the events.
The Beryl Bike rental scheme is also available and provides a sustainable way to travel to and from the event.
Cycling Without Age will be offering a free Trishaw shuttle service to the fireworks from Swannery Car Park to the Kings Statue for those with mobility difficulties. They request that people book in advance by sending a text message to 07867937700 or emailing Des@cyclingwitnoutage.org.uk
Bookings start at 8.30pm until 9.10pm and the journey takes just a few minutes. The service will be located in the Southernmost corner of Swannery Car Park near the disabled parking spaces. If there is a demand, return journeys will run from outside the Toymaster shop with the last ride leaving at 10.15pm. Please state if you need a return journey when booking.
Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr David Harris, said: “We’re fast approaching the summer season of fireworks in Weymouth Bay with the first display due to light up the night sky this Monday 3rd August, and on the remaining Monday nights in the month. From the crowds who come along, we know these events are extremely popular with residents and visitors to the town.
“To make everyone’s experience of getting to and from the five displays more enjoyable – particularly around getting home safely once the event has finished – we are trialling measures with Dorset Council to ease congestion around the Pavilion. This will be reviewed at the end of the season to assess the impact and help us plan for future events.”
