Summer Season of Fireworks Continues in Weymouth

With the first of five summer firework displays delighting the crowds on Monday (3rd August), Weymouth Town Council’s next firework event returns on Monday 10th August.

This is the first of two lower noise displays planned for August and as the fireworks get underway at 9.30pm, people are being encouraged to come early, and make a night of it.

Deputy Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Peter Dickenson, said: “Our first fireworks event of the summer season got off to a fantastic start, attracting many residents and visitors alike to enjoy the spectacular display. Weymouth has so much to offer, with pubs, cafés and restaurants serving great food, and some bars and venues providing live entertainment before the fireworks begin. We’re expecting the town centre to be busy again on Monday evening, so I’d encourage people to plan their journeys ahead, arrive early, soak up the atmosphere and make a night of it.”

Other family entertainment planned on Monday 10th August includes a Punch and Judy show on the beach at 8.30pm, and additional fairground rides at the Jubilee Clock will be on offer until firework firing time.

A reminder that the Pavilion Car Park and Pavilion Forecourt will be closed between 6pm and 10pm on firework nights only. All other town centre car parks are open, and all Dorset Council operated car parks are free after 6pm.

Dates, display types, and times

The displays are every Monday night throughout August including:

Monday 10th August – lower noise display, Monday 17th August, Monday 24th August – lower noise display, and Monday 31st August (Bank Holiday). Each display starts at 9.30pm.

Where can I view the fireworks?

The fireworks are fired from a boat moored out in the bay and can be viewed from anywhere along Weymouth’s long stretch of seafront, from the Nothe all the way over to Overcombe and Bowleaze.

Getting here

Wherever possible, people are being encouraged to leave their cars at home and walk, cycle or use public transport when getting to and from the displays. 

Parking

As stated, on summer firework nights only, access to both the Pavilion Forecourt and the car park behind the theatre will be closed between 6pm and 10pm to help ease congestion in this area.

Weymouth Town Council is working with Dorset Council to trial this approach which is being closely monitored and will be reviewed at the end of the season.

Signs will be in place advising motorists about the closure of these two car parks. All other town centre car parks will be open as normal. Please consider car sharing where possible.

Public Transport

There are a number of buses serving different communities in Weymouth and surrounding areas that bring passengers right to the beachfront. The number 1 (to Portland), the number 2 (Littlemoor and the Park and Ride), and the number 4 (to Preston via Overcombe) will have an extra double decker late-service running to cater for visitors to the fireworks. Cycling

Consider using the Beryl Bike rental scheme – a sustainable way to travel to and from the event.
