Weymouth Welcomes First GreenSeas Trust Bin to the Promenade

Fazilette Khan, Founder of the GreenSeas Trust joined the Mayor of Weymouth, local ward Councillor Cllr Jon Orrell, and staff from Weymouth Town Council to unveil a brand new bin for recycling plastic bottles on Weymouth’s seafront.

GreenSeas is a marine conservation trust which has teamed up with Weymouth Town Council to install the eye-catching bin along the promenade in a bid to reduce marine plastic pollution. The nautical-themed bin was officially unveiled on Thursday 2nd April in its location near the Jubilee Clock.

It’s the first in Weymouth – and a first for Dorset – and is the 24^th bin of its kind to be installed in the UK. It symbolises a continued commitment to combating marine plastic pollution, a mission at the heart of GreenSeas Trust’s efforts.

The BinsForGreenSeas campaign is a nationwide initiative. More than just bins, these recycling installations located in prominent seaside and riverside locations serve as daily public reminders of the urgent need to protect our oceans and rivers from plastic waste.

Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson, said: “I am proud to cut the ribbon to mark the official unveiling of this brand-new recycling facility in Weymouth. It is important to support such a worthwhile cause that will help to keep our town clean.

“There are other bins and recycling facilities in place further along the seafront, and the addition of this eye-catching bin towards the Jubilee Clock area is designed to make people stop and look. Having it there is a reminder to tourists and locals to responsibly dispose of their plastic waste and prevent it ending up on our beautiful beach or floating out to sea.”

Fazilette Khan, Founder of The GreenSeas Trust, added: “Weymouth’s seafront is the perfect place for a BinForGreenSeas, and we’re thrilled the Council has made this commitment. It sends a clear message that protecting our oceans starts on our streets, with both residents and visitors playing their part. Every bottle captured here is one less polluting our seas, and that’s how real change begins, with one simple action at a time.”
