Weymouth Town Council to host ceremony commemorating US Memorial Day
A poignant ceremony to mark US Memorial Day will be hosted by the Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Ann Weaving on Monday 30th May.
Members of the public are welcome to attend this short wreath laying service at 11am.
Cllr Ann Weaving, Mayor of Weymouth, said: “Each year many local veterans, veteran’s associations and residents attend this ceremony to show their respect for the US personnel who served or sadly died during World War II. The town has a long and strong relationship with the US and allied forces, and it is important to recognise the thousands of American personnel who left the ports at Weymouth for the D-Day landings in 1944.”
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in America, commemorating those who have died in military service for their country.
The US Memorial is located on The Esplanade adjacent to the Royal Hotel and was unveiled on 3 December 1947. It was rededicated in June 1999 and further renovation work was carried out in 2012 by local stonemasons.
