Weymouth Town Council Service to Mark US Memorial Day

Members of the public are invited to attend Weymouth Town Council’s annual US Memorial Day Service on Bank Holiday Monday, 25th May on the seafront.

The Deputy Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Peter Dickenson will host the ceremony for US Memorial Day. It takes place at 11am at the newly restored US Memorial opposite the Royal Hotel.

Military vehicles, photographs and information from Portland’s D-Day Museum will be on display at the US Memorial site during the service.

Memorial Day is a national holiday in America, commemorating those who have served and sadly died in military service for their country. Weymouth has a rich military history, with many US soldiers having left its shores to take part in the D-Day landings. The US Memorial is one of many remembrance memorials along the Promenade, to honour the brave individuals who served and sacrificed during times of conflict and war.

Deputy Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Peter Dickenson, said: “The US Memorial has undergone some restoration work, so it’s great to see the lettering and plaques restored to their former glory ahead of the service this coming Bank Holiday Monday.

“A vast number of US personnel left Weymouth Harbour to take part in D-Day in 1944, so it’s fitting that the town continues to mark this day with an annual service which members of the public are welcome to join us at.”
