Weymouth Town Council and Friends Group celebrate a new, accessible path at Lodmoor Country Park
On Wednesday 3rd December, volunteers from the Friends of Lodmoor Country Park joined Weymouth Town Council’s Greenspaces Manager and team to celebrate the new, accessible path that runs from the Campion Close entrance and past the play area to join up with the main path.
The path was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Geoff Hoskins, a friend and long-time supporter of the park, and although Geoff sadly passed away before completion, this project will be seen as his legacy and will benefit many users of the greenspace for many years to come. Weymouth Town Council and the Friends of Lodmoor Country Park intend to install a plaque to recognise the donation and to memorialise the pathway in Geoff’s honour.
Weymouth Town Council’s Greenspaces team spent just over two weeks working on this project, often through periods of rain and cold weather, but the end result was worth all the effort and will help more people to access the area.
Measuring approximately 65m in length, the level of the path has been raised by 15cm and has been designed to let rainwater soak through the surface, so it drains away. To accommodate double pushchairs, large mobility scooters and wheelchairs, the path has been made 2m wide. To help the new pathway blend into its surroundings, the edges have been levelled and sewn with grass seed.
Chair of Weymouth Town Council’s Environment and Services Committee, Cllr Matt Bell, said: “I am delighted to see the result of weeks of hard work installing a new, accessible pathway at Lodmoor Country Park. This is one of Weymouth’s wonderful greenspaces, and an area popular with people of all ages. I hope that the path will enable more people to enjoy all that this space has to offer. My thanks go to the late Mr Hoskins for his very generous contribution, to Weymouth Town Council’s Greenspaces Team and of course, to all the Friends of Lodmoor Country Park.”
