Weymouth to mark Holocaust Memorial Day with Ceremony in the Council Chamber
Weymouth Town Council’s annual ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day will take place on Tuesday 27th January at 10.30am in the Council Chamber, The New Town Hall, Weymouth, DT4 8NG.
The ceremony is hosted by the Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson, alongside chaplain Father Scott Anderson. There will also be related readings given by speakers during the ceremony.
Holocaust Memorial Day occurs every year on 27th January, which is the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. The day is to remember the millions of people who lost their lives during the Holocaust and those who died in the genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfu.
The theme for this year is “Bridging Generations”, which acts as a reminder that the responsibility of remembrance lives on through all of us, including the younger members of society. This theme aims to encourage everybody to listen to stories about the past, to learn and take those lessons forwards; helping to build a bridge between history and hope for the future. You can visit Holocaust Memorial Day Trust | Bridging Generations: Theme for 2026 for more information.
Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson, said: “It is an honour to host this poignant ceremony, which offers us the opportunity to reflect on the tragedies of the Holocaust and other genocides, and to remember all those around the world who have been affected. Weymouth has supported this national day for many years, and the ceremony remains a valued part of the civic calendar, which helps to raise awareness about Holocaust Memorial Day.”
Members of the public are welcome to attend the ceremony and are advised to arrive a few minutes before the start of the event, which is at 10.30am.
