Round-up of decisions from Environment and Services Committee

From firework displays to plans for a concert to celebrate VE Day in 2025, here’s a round-up of decisions made at Weymouth Town Council’s Environment and Services Committee on Wednesday 18th September.

Fireworks – following evaluation of the summer season of fireworks, Councillors agreed these will continue over the next five years, along with the traditional bonfire night display on November 5th. They also agreed that two of the summer displays will be lower noise fireworks.

Funfairs – a funfair will take place between August 8th and 20th at the Jubilee Clock. Councillors also agreed to form a working group to look at alternative sites to the Pavilion Forecourt where funfairs could take place. The group will report back to the committee in December.

Celebrations to mark VE Day in May 2025 were also decided. To honour the 80th anniversary since World War II ended, Weymouth will host the following events:

On Saturday 10th May – A live music concert will be held on the beach, featuring local bands and musicians. The concert could include a mix of genres, and a focus on songs from the era to honour the VE Day theme. People would be encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, and picnics to create a relaxed, festival-like atmosphere.

£3,500 will be available for community groups to put on VE Day-themed events. Each group could apply for up to £350 to go towards costs of these community events including food and refreshments, decorations, entertainment, equipment and materials, displays and educational activities, venue hire and insurance.

There will also be a Dig for Victory-inspired competition to grow fruit and veg, especially at the Council’s allotment sites. More details to be publicised in due course. And Weymouth Town Council will waive site fees for events held on Council land on 8th May, provided they are associated with VE Day and are community or charity led.

Carols on the Coast, an event which started last year, was also given the green light to continue.

Chair of Environment and Services Committee, Cllr Matt Bell, said: “Weymouth has a rich history of putting on a variety of events, and next year will be no exception, with a live music concert on the beach to celebrate VE day, and a variety of firework displays and fairground attractions to enjoy.

“The Council gratefully received and listened to feedback regarding firework displays. Two of the five summer displays will now use low noise fireworks. We are keen to offer a range of events and attractions that cater for a variety of audiences.”
