Round-up of decisions from Environment and Services Committee

Councillors on Weymouth Town Council’s Environment and Services Committee met on Wednesday 10th December and made the following decisions.

Watercraft permits

Following initial pilot year of the Preston Watercraft Storage Scheme, members of the committee approved the continuation of the permit scheme at Oasis Beach in its current location.

Future of Greenhill Rafts

Councillors voted unanimously to defer the item and request Dorset Council’s view on self-insurance. They also agreed a member briefing to review the technical position and legal advice received by the Council. In addition, officers will be reaching out to the local MP regarding the matter.

Funfairs for 2026 and beyond

In 2025, funfair rides were situated at the Jubilee Clock from the 1st August – 28th August. Councillors agreed that the funfair remains sited at the Jubilee Clock for 2026 and future seasons, for a maximum of up to 28 days in August each year.

Sandsfoot Gardens Bridge

As per the recommendation in the report, Councillors agreed to remove the existing bridge structure and install a glass panel and steel balustrade where the bridge currently joins the ‘formal gardens’, along with interpretation boards regarding the surrounding views. This would allow unrestricted view of the castle while it is still in place, without the additional cost of a replacement structure.

IronKids event

Councillors voted against funding £10,000 towards the inclusion of the IronKids event in Weymouth in September 2026, with a view that the funding could be used for other community purposes and community development.

Cllr Matt Bell, Chair of Environment and Services Committee, said: “From discussing watercraft storage permits, the future of Greenhill rafts, funfair sites to the bridge at Sandsfoot Gardens and a proposal of an Ironkids event, it was a packed agenda which generated plenty of discussion and a varied set of outcomes.

“I would like to thank those members of the public who gave their time to join us in what was a busy committee meeting.”
