Round-up of decisions from Environment and Services Committee
Councillors on Weymouth Town Council’s Environment and Services Committee met on Wednesday 12th March and agreed the following items which will now go to Full Council for a final decision.
Radipole Park Drainage Options
Drainage improvement measures have been costed to help mitigate against flooding that happens at the much-loved and well-used Radipole Park Gardens. Improvements include raising the pedestrian path that runs from the car park to the orchard area and northern entrance and improving the surface water drainage in the children’s play area. The cost of carrying out this work is estimated to be £145,750.
This will now be considered by Full Council in May along with other projects on the priority list.
Palm trees
The two largest palm trees on Weymouth’s seafront are set to be replaced with two smaller palms. They have grown significantly since they were put in over a decade ago and are now causing structural damage to the promenade which needs to be managed now before any further repairs are needed. Councillors agreed they should be replaced with palms like those found further along the promenade which would still have visual impact. The stonework planters would also be repaired.
Other palms along the seafront would be managed in the same way in future years. This item will also go to Full Council for a final decision.
Free parking to support events
The following events were selected for free parking, which will now go to Dorset Council to approve.
Sunday 22nd June, as part of the Council’s flagship Armed Forces Weekend, Remembrance Sunday service on Sunday 9th November, the Beach Motocross event on Sunday 12th October, and the Christmas lights switch-on event on Saturday 29th November.
Dorset Council offers four dates each year when Weymouth Town Council can use selected car parks for free for events that attract significant footfall to the town.
In addition, Small Business Saturday is also given, and this year takes place on Saturday 6th December. An additional weekday in December is also offered by Dorset Council, and Monday 22nd December was suggested.
Seafront Promotional Flagpoles
The promotional flagpoles along the seafront have been in place since before the 2012 Olympics and need to be replaced. Councillors agreed to replace the existing poles with new aluminium poles which have a significantly longer lifespan than the current flagpoles. This item will also be considered by Full Council.
Cllr Matt Bell, Chair of Environment and Services Committee, said: “At the committee meeting, we were presented with a range of options on different issues, including improved drainage at Radipole Park Gardens and managing the palm trees along the seafront for future enjoyment. I’m pleased that these initiatives, along with the replacement of the worn flagpoles were supported and will now go to Full Council for further consideration.
“I’d also like to thank all the event organisers who took the time to complete our survey and submit events to be supported with free parking in 2025. Motocross, the Christmas lights switch-on along with one day of Weymouth Armed Forces Weekend in June and Remembrance Sunday were selected as our four free days, which will now be shared with Dorset Council to approve.”
