Round-up of decisions and announcements from Full Council
Here’s a round-up of some of the key decisions and announcements made at Weymouth Town Council’s Full Council meeting on Wednesday 26th February.
Mayor’s Fundraiser Event
Cllr Jon Orrell, Weymouth’s Mayor, announced a fundraising event for his chosen charity The Lantern Trust. The event takes place on Friday 2nd May at the Centenary Club from 7.30pm. There will be a band playing Blues Brothers-style covers, a raffle, and all proceeds will go towards the work of the charity which do a lot of work to help the homeless community in Weymouth. Tickets are available by emailing mayor@weymouthtowncouncil.gov.uk
Draft Neighbourhood Plan for Weymouth
Councillors endorsed the Draft Neighbourhood Plan that is currently being consulted on by Dorset Council, together with the list of corrections made since Full Council met in November 2024.
They also extended the delegation to the existing Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group to represent Weymouth Town Council at the examination stage to answer any questions from the examiner or attend any hearings that are held. Any changes to the Weymouth Neighbourhood Plan suggested by the examiner will be brought back to the Council for agreement.
Cemetery Management Policy 2025-2029
The refreshed policy recommended from Environment and Services Committee was adopted by Full Council. It sets out how the Council manages the town’s cemeteries, a project to digitise records to make them available online, details the living cemetery areas, and includes plans for improved signage allowing people to find graves more easily.
Café kiosks on Weymouth’s seafront
Following a recent procurement exercise, the committee agreed to award two contracts for the running of the Beach Café and the Prom Café, granting ten-year leases to both operators.
Once the contracts have been signed, the intention is to have the new tenants operating both kiosks ahead of the busy season. Updates will be provided in due course.
Attraction sites
A procurement exercise also ran for Weymouth’s beach attractions. Members agreed to award the individual five-year contracts for attraction sites A5 and A6. And variations to planning conditions were also approved by Dorset Council’s area planning committee yesterday, Thursday 27th February, which will allow an observation wheel to be sited on the beach opposite Alexandra Gardens, and for attractions sites A3, A4 and A5 to merge into one unified site. This new configuration will not only make better use of the space but will allow for a more themed and cohesive approach for attractions. A5 will feature a mix of both traditional and modern attractions including the return of the iconic Helter Skelter. Full Council also agreed to explore the option of an additional attraction in the future, subject to further approvals.
