Historic military vehicle convoy rolls in to Weymouth for Armed Forces Weekend

Kevin, from Dorset Military Vehicle Association gives us the lowdown on what to expect on Saturday 22nd June when over 70 historic military vehicles descend on the town replicating the convoys seen in Weymouth and Portland 80 years ago.

Kevin says: “The Weymouth Military Festival Parade was founded by Poppy Butcher in 1994 with her late husband John to celebrate D-Day 50. She has been involved in the organisation, in collaboration with the local council, ever since then. This is the 30th anniversary of the parade coinciding with the recent D-Day 80 commemorations.

Poppy added: “We have always marked the occasion to honour all our service personnel and I always look forward to meeting people who have been coming for many years. Also meeting those driving the vehicles and those just coming out cheering and taking the time to appreciate them.”

You can view the convoy on Saturday leaving the Pavilion at 12.30pm towards the Castletown D-Day Centre in Portland. On Sunday, the vehicles depart Lodmoor car park at 11.40am and will then follow the veterans and military bands as they march along Weymouth Esplanade towards the Pavilion after our service.
