What to expect this Remembrance Sunday

Join us on Sunday 10th November, along with the Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Jon Orrell, his Chaplain Rev’d Neil Biles, veterans, Councillors, and members of the Armed Forces for a service of remembrance.

The service is at the Cenotaph on Weymouth Promenade from 10.55am on Remembrance Sunday and provides an opportunity to come together to remember the service and sacrifice of all those who defend our freedoms and protect our way of life.

At 11am, members of the Nothe Fort Garrison will fire the first cannon from the beach, signalling the start of the two-minute silence, followed by a second at 11.02am to mark the end. There will be a wreath laying service at the Cenotaph followed by a parade along the Esplanade to the US Memorial Service where a further short wreath laying ceremony will also take place.

Free Parking

On the day, there will be free parking in Dorset Council operated car parks including The Swannery, Melcombe Regis or Park Street to support this event.

Parking Prohibition

Between 9pm on Saturday 9th November and approximately 12pm on Sunday 10th November, no parking will be permitted at the following locations which form the service and route of the parade, its assembly and dispersal points.

The Esplanade – both sides between King Street and Lennox Street

Parking bays in Astrid Way

The parking area fronting the Pier Bandstand

The loading bay adjacent Enzo’s Restaurant

“No Waiting” cones will be placed at these locations on the afternoon of Saturday 9th November 2024.  Please note: Drivers are asked to avoid parking there. Any illegally parked vehicles may be issued with a Fixed Penalty Ticket and risk their vehicle being towed away when the areas are checked on Sunday morning.

Traffic Diversions

The Esplanade from William Street to King Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 1000 hours until approximately 1200 hours.

Further traffic diversions will also be in effect from 1200 hours until approximately 1230 hours on The Esplanade between King Street and the Kings Statue.  Diversion signage will be place.

These measures have been implemented with the safety of all residents, general public and those attending the Parade in mind.

Cannon fire noise

People attending the service at Weymouth’s Cenotaph are pre-warned that the cannon fire will be loud!
