The Poppy of Honour to Visit Weymouth During Armed Forces Weekend

Weymouth Town Council has announced a unique memorial called the Poppy of Honour will be on display to the public at its flagship Armed Forces Weekend.

You can see it in person on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st June on the seafront from 10am.

Standing at 2.6metres tall, the unique Poppy of Honour has been created to record the allied servicemen and women who were lost in the First World War.

Terry Williams, a Regular Army Veteran from Somerset, who served with the Light Infantry and Reserves during the 1970s and 1980s came up with the idea for the giant poppy. Within the cavity are 117,635 individual red poppies for every member of the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces lost during the conflict. Each poppy also bears the name and rank for the individual it commemorates, all handwritten by volunteers from all over the world.

Cllr Carol Cronshow, from West Monkton Parish Council, who along with husband David, is bringing the poppy to Weymouth, said: We are taking this Memorial on tour around the South of England with one event in Wales. Our mission is to allow as many people as possible to view the unique structure before we put it in its final resting place at Maidenbrook Country Park in Taunton.

“The Country Park is developing a living, green memorial walk to all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.  We realise that the West Country doesn’t have anything like this and wish people to come along and visit us and take time to sit and reflect in a beautiful calm environment.”
