Youth Council Head to Westminster During Parliament Week

Last week, members of Weymouth’s Youth Council engaged with around 60 young people ahead of their trip to London for Parliament Week.

They hosted local scout, brownie and explorer groups to help them understand more about how local government works and how they can get involved.

Each evening included a short presentation from Youth Council members about what they do and how the visiting groups could take part in future activities. There was an interactive discussion about local government, decision-making, and the many ways young people can have their voices heard.

Councillors from Weymouth Town Council also attended including Alex Fuhrmann, Kate Wheller, Louie O’Leary, Lee Harmsworth, Matt Bell and Caroline Nickinson, Mayor of Weymouth. They gave overviews on what the role of mayor is, what services Weymouth Town Council deliver, what councillors do, and why they decided to become councillors.

And tomorrow, Tuesday 25th November, a group of Youth Council reps are off to London for a visit to Westminster. They will be visiting the Houses of Parliament and have a meeting planned with the local MP. The trip coincides with Parliament Week.

So, if you’re not already following @weymouthwtc on Instagram, now is the perfect opportunity to start. The Youth Council are doing an ‘Instagram Takeover’ posting fun updates and stories about their day in the big smoke.

Parliament Week runs from the 24th to the 30th November and is an annual event, spreading the word about what Parliament is, what it does and how you can get involved. For more details, visit the website.
