All you need to know about Remembrance Sunday in Weymouth

Weymouth’s Remembrance Sunday service and parade takes place on Sunday 9th November at the Weymouth War Memorial on the Promenade.

The Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson will be joined by her Chaplain Father Scott Anderson, veterans, Councillors – including the Armed Forces Covenant Liaison, and members of the Armed Forces for the service, which begins at 10.55am. Members of the public are invited to join together to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of all those who defend our freedoms and protect our way of life.

To signal the start of the two-minute silence, members of the Nothe Fort Garrison will fire the first cannon from the beach at 11am, followed by a second at 11.02am to mark the end.

There will be a wreath laying service at the Weymouth War Memorial followed by a parade along the Esplanade to the US Memorial Service where a short wreath laying ceremony will also take place.

Any organisations such as local schools, Brownie or Scout groups who wish to lay a wreath at Weymouth War Memorial during the official service should notify the Town Council by Friday 7th November, by emailing events@weymouthtowncouncil.gov.uk

Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson said: “Weymouth has a rich military history, and I am honoured to be joining representatives from our Armed Forces for this year’s Remembrance Sunday service at Weymouth War Memorial, where I will lay a wreath on behalf of the Town Council. Members of the public are welcome to join us for this poignant service and should gather at Weymouth War Memorial in good time as we prepare to pay tribute to our Armed Forces personnel – past, present and future.”

Cllr Joanna Dickenson, Armed Forces Covenant Liaison, added: “It is a huge privilege to attend Weymouth’s Remembrance Sunday Service as Weymouth Town Council’s Armed Forces Covenant Liaison. To stand with so many other families in Weymouth who have connections to the Armed Forces is a real honour.
