Round-up of decisions from Environment and Services Committee
Councillors on Weymouth Town Council’s Environment and Services Committee met on Wednesday 4th June and made the following decisions.
Update and renewal of the Bench Policy 2025 – 2030
Councillors agreed that amendments to the updated Bench Policy for 2025 – 2030 would be required.
Beach Sauna
Following a successful trial of a beach sauna at the Pier Bandstand from 1st November 2024 – 28th February 2025, it was agreed for officers to go out to tender for a 5-year licence, with a break clause at year 3. This will be for the operation of a mobile wood-fired sauna on Weymouth Beach south of the Pier Bandstand, in line with the approved planning permission. Feedback from last winter’s trial period was positive towards the Council and operator, with support for providing a new and different facility for people to enjoy at this time of year.
Beach Operations Building
An informal tender exercise took place between 17th April and 16th May 2025 for the use of the Beach Operations Building located on Weymouth Beach. Councillors agreed to the appointment of the successful bidder, the Surf Lifesaving Club and this will now go to Full Council for approval to seal the lease for 3 years.
Ironman 70.3 Agreement
Weymouth has successfully hosted the Ironman 70.3 since 2016, which is an event that brings people from all over the world to the town and provides significant economic benefits. Councillors agreed to recommend to Full Council to proceed and seal the Host Venue Agreement for 2026 – 2028.
Cllr Matt Bell, Chair of Environment and Services Committee, said:
“From discussing policies and agreeing on a tender process for a beach sauna near the Pier Bandstand, to confirming our desire for the incredible Ironman 70.3 event to continue for the next three years, it was an exciting and varied set of outcomes from the committee meeting.
“It’s fantastic news that we now go out to tender for a mobile wood-fired sauna on the beach to provide an important winter amenity. I am also thrilled that we are progressing towards securing a key sporting event, Ironman 70.3, that brings more than £2.3 million to the local area and inspires both children and adults to exercise in our stunning natural environment.”
