Service in Weymouth to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2025
On Monday 27th January, Weymouth Town Council’s annual service to recognise Holocaust Memorial Day will take place in Radipole Park and Gardens, Radipole Park Drive, Weymouth.
The service will begin at 10.30am at the Holocaust Memorial Tree, planted near Alexandra Bridge and is hosted by the Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Jon Orrell.
The Chaplain leading the service, Neil Biles, will say prayers and a reading and will be joined by Barbara Cohen, who will be speaking on behalf of the local Jewish community. Local Councillors will also be attending.
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) occurs every year on 27th January, which is the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. The day is to remember the millions of people who lost their lives during the Holocaust and those who died in the genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfu. This year will mark the 80th anniversary of this liberation as well as the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
The theme for this year is “For a Better Future”, which presents an opportunity for members of the community to unite, whilst learning from and about the Holocaust and genocides to create a better future for all. You can visit Holocaust Memorial Day Trust | HMD 2025 Theme for more information.
Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Jon Orrell said “I am proud to host this poignant service and join with members of our community to reflect and remember those around the world affected by the Holocaust and other genocides, both past and present. This is an important event, which helps to raise awareness about Holocaust Memorial Day.”
Members of the public are welcome to attend this service and are advised to arrived a few minutes before the start of the event, which is at 10.30am.
