Holocaust Memorial Day 2025

Monday 27th January marks Holocaust Memorial Day, which is the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945.

And although Weymouth Town Council’s annual service in Radipole Park and Gardens was cancelled due to adverse weather, this poignant day was still recognised. The Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Jon Orrell and local resident Barbara Cohen, were joined by staff at The New Town Hall where they lit a candle to remember those around the world affected by the Holocaust and other genocides, both past and present. (pictured below)

Barbara also took the time to read out the speech she would have delivered at the planned event. Below is a quote from Barbara’s reading and you can listen to the full recording by clicking play on the audio file:

“In this new year of 2025, let’s make sure we keep our candle of hope alight. We can all make a difference to our world by the way we behave. Sometimes just a smile to a stranger as we pass in the street, let’s all take responsibility for being the change we want to see in the world.”

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation as well as the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia. The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2025 is “For a Better Future”, which presents an opportunity for members of the community to unite, whilst learning from and about the Holocaust and genocides to create a better future for all. You can visit Holocaust Memorial Day Trust | HMD 2025 Theme for more information.

Weymouth Town Council also encouraged people could visit the Holocaust memorial tree planted at Radipole Park Gardens for quiet reflection during a more suitable time over the coming week.
