Job Title: Greenspaces Maintenance Operative

Grade: SCP 12: £26,421, Fixed Term until September 2024

Service: Greenspaces

Reporting to: Greenspaces Supervisor

Supervises: No direct supervision

Job Purpose: To support the effective ad efficient grounds maintenance operations of the Greenspaces service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out a wide range of maintenance operations within Weymouth Town Council’s parks and gardens, duties to include emptying bins, strimming, blowing off paths, shrub maintenance, fencing, and general maintenance work.
  • Undertake litter collection/picking operation (occasional weekend working during the summer may be required)
  • Supporting grass cutting operations when required.
  • Assist with watering hanging baskets – this will require early starts.
  • Assist gardeners in various tasks, such as planting, pruning shrubs, emergency works as a result of vandalism, etc.
  • The service is totally flexible, staff will be required to perform any task for which they are trained and are physically able to do within both the local and the wider service area as required.  A flexible approach will be essential as the locations and types of work will vary throughout the year.
  • The duties and responsibilities of the post are not restrictive and the post holder may be required to undertake other duties from time to time.  Any such duties should not, however, substantially change the general character of the post.

Expected hours: 30 – 40 per week

Weymouth Town Council is looking for people to join the Resort Team for the 2024 spring and summer season.

The Resort Team are responsible for the operation of Weymouth’s award-winning beach and seafront, events, public toilets and two cafes, and as a Resort Team member, you’ll be working across all these areas, helping to make Weymouth a place where everyone is proud to work, live, play and visit.

Key duties include:

  • Operating the Council’s beach equipment hire scheme, handling cash, setting up and packing away equipment.
  • Assisting the Resort Management team and partner agencies in responding to emergency situations and incidents such as lost-children, first-aid, water safety etc. in line with Council protocol.
  • Supporting events, such as Fireworks Nights, Bonfire Night and Armed Forces weekend.
  • Conducting safety inspections of the Council’s assets on the beach, promenade, and town centre, taking action to resolve any issues.
  • Supporting the operation of the catering kiosks, providing cover during busy periods, lunch breaks etc.
  • Ensuring that the beach, seafront and Council assets, such as public toilets, are clean and well-maintained, creating a welcoming environment for all.
  • Assisting with other duties as reasonably by the Council.

The post-holder will be working outdoors in various weather conditions.

The role requires a reasonable level of fitness, with the ability to undertake manual handling activities on a regular basis. Working hours will vary and may change at short notice, for example, during bad weather. The role is primarily daytime hours between 09:00 and 18:00, however some evening working will be required, for example, on firework nights, or when supporting other resort areas. Weekend working is expected as part of the role. It is expected that a small number of team members will start around April, with additional team members joining in May, June and July.
