Light up our Jubilee Clock for charity

2022

The council will once again be lighting up Weymouth’s iconic Jubilee Clock throughout the year to raise awareness for good causes. After considering nominations from the public, the following charities and events have been chosen by a panel of councillors:

National Apprenticeship Week

Date: 7th-13th February

Colour: Blue

The 15th annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships. Find out more.

Weymouth Street Pastors

Date: 25th-28th February

Colour: Blue

Street pastors are trained volunteers from local churches who provide to support to people in Weymouth town centre on Friday and Saturday nights. Find out more.

Julian House

Date: 11th-14th March

Colour: Blue

Julian House provides homeless services and accommodation, domestic abuse services, criminal justice, employment support and more across the south west. Find out more.

MYTIME Young Carers

Date: 16th March

Colour: Pink

MYTIME Young Carers’ mission is to level the playing field for young carers by providing them with the support, friendship and opportunities that every child deserves. Find out more.

Marie Curie

Date: 23rd March

Colour: Yellow

Marie Curie is an end of life charity providing support on all aspects of dying, death and bereavement. Find out more.

Young Epilepsy / Epilepsy Action

Date: 26th March

Colour: Purple

The 26th March is Purple Day, a time to get people talking about epilepsy, raise awareness of the condition and raise vital funds. Find out more.

We’re especially highlighting the work of Young Epilepsy and Epilepsy Action.

Autism Acceptance Week

Date: 28th March-3rd April

Colour: Blue

Pioneered by the National Autistic Society (NAS), Autism Acceptance Week aims to help create a society that works for autistic people. Find out more.

Weymouth Town Charities

Date: 8th April

Colour: Yellow and green

The Weymouth Town Charities run an educational trust for young people from the Weymouth & Portland area and also low cost accommodation for the elderly people of Weymouth & Portland. Find out more.

Weymouth and Portland Scouts

Date: 22nd-25th April

Colour: Purple

Every year in Weymouth & Portland over 400 young people enjoy new adventures, experience the outdoors, gain confidence and have the opportunity to reach their full potential through Scouting. Find out more.

RNLI May Day Campaign

Date: 1st May

Colour: Red, yellow and blue

RNLI lifesavers are determined to be there when they’re needed most. Help them get ready to save lives this summer by taking part in The Mayday Mile. Find out more.

Dorset Mind / Mental Health Week

Colour: Blue

Mental Health Awareness Week is hosted every May by the Mental Health Foundation. Find out more.

Foggys

Date: 12th May

Colour: Blue

12th May is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) International Awareness Day. Find out more.

We’re especially highlighting the work of Foggys who support people with invisible illnesses.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Date: 2nd-5th June

Colour: Red, white and blue

Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. A special bank holiday will be taking place to mark this occasion. Find out more.

Weymouth Armed Forces & Veterans Celebrations

Date: 17th-20th June

Colour: Red, white and blue

The clock will be lit in support of Weymouth’s annual armed forces & veterans celebrations. Find out more.

The panel will meet again in June to discuss through and confirm the lighting schedule for July to December 2022.

2021

in 2021, we lit up Weymouth’s iconic Jubilee Clock throughout the year to raise awareness for worthy causes.

This carried on from 2020 when we illuminated the clockface in support of a range of charities and causes including our NHS, Lifeboat Week, Poppy Appeal and Pancreatic Cancer.

In January 2021, we asked the public for suggestions of charities and organisations to represent over the next year. We aimed to represent one charity per month by lighting up the clock with the charity’s chosen colour for three days.

The full list of the organisations, charities and awareness days which were represented over the year, as voted for by councillors based on public nominations, is as follows:

Encephalitis Society

From Friday 20 to Tuesday 23 Feb we lit the the clock red.

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain caused by an infection or through the immune system attacking the brain in error. Encephalitis Society is a charity which provides support and information for those affected by this this devastating illness. They also collaborate on research and work to raise awareness of the condition. Find out more.

Marie Curie

From Friday 19 to Tuesday 23 March we lit the clock yellow.

Our local Marie Curie nursing team provides care and support to people with terminal illnesses, and their families, at the end of their life.

Parkinson’s UK

From Monday 5 to Saturday 10 April we lit the clock blue.

Parkinson’s UK is a Parkinson’s research and support charity, offering information and support to patients and families affected by Parkinson’s disease. We are lucky to have an active branch in Weymouth and also a Parkinson’s nurse. Find out more.

Weymouth Repair Café

From Friday 7 to Tuesday 11 May we lit the clock orange.

Repair Cafes are meeting places where local residents take household items to be repaired to avoid them going in the bin unnecessarily. Volunteers fix broken items that members of the public bring to Repair Cafe events as the visitor watches, so they pick up the skills or gain the confidence to do repairs for themselves. Diabetes UK

From Friday 11 to Tuesday 15 June we lit the clock blue.

Diabetes UK works to help people suffering from diabetes, as well as providing funding for research, raising awareness and campaigning. Find out more.

Weymouth RNLI

From Friday 23 to Tuesday 27 July we lit the clock orange and blue.

RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour rescue service and their seasonal lifeguards look after people on busy beaches. They also work to influence and educate people on the risks and share safety knowledge with anyone going out to sea or to the coast.

Weymouth is one of the busiest Lifeboat stations on England’s south coast. It operates two lifeboats – Ernest and Mabel. As a seaside town with a fishing port the lifeboat is a vital resource to saving life at sea. Find out more.

Will Mackaness Trust

From Friday 20 to Tuesday 24 August we lit the clock blue.

The Will Mackaness Trust give young people the opportunity to experience different water sports and give financial support to those who have shown a particular skill in it. This includes but is not limited to: windsurfing, kayaking, surfing and sailing. Find out more.

The Three Ells

From Friday 17 to Tuesday 21 September we lit the clock blue.

The Three Ells Trust was formed in 2000 by David and Helen Naerger following the loss of their son, Lewis, aged 16 years from an Osteosarcoma (Primary Bone Tumour). They are a local charity and offer vital financial support to families whose child has been diagnosed with cancer or other life-changing illnesses. Find out more.

Weymouth Sea Cadets

From Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 October we lit the clock blue.

Weymouth Sea Cadets support children and young adults within the borough and have an inclusive policy. They aim to give all cadets experiences in life by offering activities, adventure and education. Their ethos is built around discipline, friendship and community and follows the traditions of the Royal Navy. Find out more.

Dorset Domestic Abuse

From Thursday 25 to Tuesday 30 November we lit the clock purple.

Dorset Domestic Abuse offer support through grants to organisations providing support courses for victims of domestic abuse and we awareness raise in our communities.

C Siders

From Friday 3 to Tuesday 7 December we lit the clock sky blue and white.

C Siders provide a support network for anyone who has had a cancer diagnosis and their carers. They provide presentations from a range of experts on a wide and eclectic range of topics from relaxation and exercise to star gazing. It is a safe forum for people to meet and chat about their experiences and we signpost members to support services within the county. Find out more.
