Meet Your Councillor

Cllr Helen Toft

Name: Helen Toft

Ward you represent: Wyke Regis

Any committee roles? Services Committee and Climate and Environmental Emergency Working Party

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I am a Green Councillor after winning a by election in July 2022. I am married with 2 boys. I have lived in Weymouth for many years. I was a School Governor for over 10 years. I campaigned against Dorset Country Council in 2012 when they wanted to cut School Crossing Patrols across the County. It took me a year of Campaigning but I won. I hate injustice and unfairness – if I see a problem, I can usually see a solution. I always have a project on the go and am a crafter, gardener, vegetarian and a cold-water swimmer.

What motivated you to become a councillor?

I worked for several years for Weymouth BID and enjoyed being involved in what went on in the town. I was interested in seeing what the New Town Council was achieving so it seemed an obvious next move when a vacancy arose. With only 7 women on a Council of 29 it was important to stand.

What do you enjoy most about the role?

Being able to see and understand the bigger picture and the background to how the Council works and being able to make a contribution towards making Weymouth better for our future.

What’s the most frequent issue you deal with in your ward?

In the summer months mostly inconsiderate parking. Also some concerns with speeding on the major routes.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking about becoming a councillor?

If you are a woman, please consider standing for election, there are only 7 women on a council of 29, this is not a fair representation of the population as a whole and women have a much different take on many issues and we need to be heard. If you are a man, encourage a woman you know to join. We also need young people to stand, so don’t be afraid to have your say.

How can people contact you if they have an issue to raise?

Surgery dates at the Wyke Library will be coming shortly.
