Students supported by Weymouth Town Council to carry out community litter picks

A group of conscientious litter pickers from Westfield Arts College have been provided with litter pick equipment by Weymouth Town Council.

The students have done two litter picks along Littlemoor Road and the Littlemoor estate where they collected around six bin bags of litter each time. They plan to do follow-up events every Tuesday up until the end of the school term.

Westfield students said: “We are all proud to be able to keep our community clean and tidy.”

To support people in the community who want to do litter picks, Weymouth Town Council (in partnership with Litter Free Dorset) provide free litter pick equipment to those who want to organise a community litter pick.

Cllr David Harris, Leader of the Council and spokesperson on the Climate and Ecological Emergency, said: “Huge thanks to the fantastic role models at Westfield Arts College for arranging these litter picks. Weymouth Town Council is committed to making the town a cleaner and greener place to live, work, and visit and these sorts of events all help towards this shared goal.

“We’re very supportive of members of the community who want to help reduce litter and improve the town’s appearance by doing litter picks and we’re keen to hear from other people in the local area who are interested in hiring the equipment.”

Cllr Ann Weaving, Mayor of Weymouth, who also represents Littlemoor ward said: “My heartfelt thanks go to the students at Westfield for coming together to carry out these litter picks. You are such a credit to your school and the local community.”

There are two kits available to hire containing items such as litter picking sticks, high-vis vests, bags, and gloves. Visit Weymouth Town Council’s website to find out more about hiring equipment for a community litter pick, email litterpicking@weymouthtowncouncil.gov.uk or call 01305 239839 to check availability and make a booking.
